Food Parcels for Destitute Asylum Seekers

Mohammed, an asylum seeker from Iraq, has been refused refugee status in this country.  He is too
terrified to return home because he believes his life would be in danger.  He is now in limbo without State
support or the right to work.  He sleeps rough - occasionally friends let him sleep on their floor.

He is typical of many destitute asylum seekers that Coventry Refugee Centre helps with food parcels.
When he can get one he takes it to his friends as his contribution to the housekeeping.
It encourages them to let him stay longer and it gives him back a bit of dignity.

For the past nine months Student Action for Refugees (STAR) at Warwick University has funded the food
parcels through a winter sleep-out, speed-dating and other activities!  They will start again in October.
In the meantime the Refugee Centre still needs £100 a week to provide the parcels.

Donations should be sent to Coventry Refugee Centre, 15 Bishop Street, Coventry CV1 1HU.  Cheques
should be made out to ‘Coventry Refugee Centre’ and marked Destitution Fund on the back.  Deliveries
of donations in kind should be arranged through Pam Still at the Centre (024 7652 7120) who will tell you
the best times.

CTRIC's purpose is to make churches in particular more aware of the needs of asylum-seekers and
refugees in Coventry, and to see how they can respond to those needs.

It aims to have members from all the mainstream Christian denominations in Coventry as well as inviting
other people with relevant interests or experience to be members.

In 2005 CTRIC appointed a volunteer outreach worker to work with church schools as well as church
congregations.  She has recruited a
team of volunteers and is based at the
CTRIC office in Hall Green Methodist Church
(telephone 024 7666 4983).

Other recent activities have been the 2004 Christmas Appeal which raised over £2000 for Coventry
Refugee Centre’s Destitution Fund.

Refugees – Myth Busting Training

Many of you will have seen the excellent Myth Busting booklet produced in Coventry for Refugee Week.

Now some training is available for people who would be interested in sharing the ideas with others in
their churches, schools, communities and groups.

The meetings will held at 7.30pm on Wednesday evenings at Hall Green Methodist Church, Roseberry
Avenue, Coventry, CV2 1NE on 18th October 2006, 22nd November 2006, 13th December 2006 and
24th January 2007
